  • A Rational Meataxe and the Automatic Construction of Irreducible Rational Representations of Finite Groups
  • 3pm–4pm, Tuesday 3rd November, 2009
  • Carlaw 535
  • I will describe a practical Meataxe algorithm for decomposing A-modules over the rational field, and how this is applied in a system for the automatic construction of irreducible rational representations of a given finite group.

  • MPIR: A library for Multiple Precision Arithmetic
  • 4pm–5pm, Tuesday 3rd November, 2009
  • Carlaw 535
  • The MPIR project is a library for multiple precision integer and rational arithmetic, based on the GNU MP library. Work on MPIR began about two years ago and the library has just had its fifth major release. Since that time multiple precision arithmetic has roughly doubled in speed.

I shall describe some of the recent algorithmic and other improvements which have been made in the area, as implemented in the MPIR library.
